Alternative to Microsoft Exchange Server and Outlook Web Access (OWA)

Users with two or more computers had, when wanting the same data on the computers, in the past been faced with the fact, that the only solution that they could implement, to fluidly synchronize the two data pools, was Microsoft’s Exchange Server, which is in most cases to expensive for the most of them to cope with.

The low cost alternative is Plaxo’s web-services, combined with changing your mailbox settings from the POP3 to the IMAP4 protocal (provided by most ASPs and freemail services; some of them charge a little fee).

You can thus use all of your computers simultaneously and synchronize your data between them as you would do it with an Exchange Server.

Please note, that this is not a real alternative if you are more than one user. You are then still in need of a groupware solution!

Intranets and how they allow you to increase workforce productivity

Some of the advantages of intranets are obvious, some are a little hidden. Using intranets, you enable horizontal communication and vertical communication to your emloyees. Then there is the profit of offering the information on a pull basis. Rather than sending news via email on your corporate network via the push method, using the pull-method, you avoid high data volume and email traffic and furthermore allow your staff to select on the information they might want to use and when they want to use it.

The advantages at a glance:

Organizing costs time and money!
Let us say an employee in your organization costs you 100 currency units an hour.
Working 40 hrs a week, thus being a debit of 16000 currency units a month.
If he/she spends only 10hours a month on organizing and selecting incoming email for it's quality and relevance regarding his/her role, he/she has produced an effective loss of 1000 currency units.

This loss could partially be avoided be offering the information on in intranet. But this is not the only benefit because:

• the information is published centrally and has to be organized by only one person
• traffic on your network is reduced
• vertical communication is as easy as horizontal communication
• the information is available on a pull basis
• employees can look up relevant information at a time which suits them
